More than a knife

A good palette knife is like a well worn baseball glove or a favorite hat that fits just right, or even like a pair of broken in molded Birkenstock sandals. It's also like a weapon in the war of expression and technique.

This is one of my most loved tools. I have three must have knives when I'm painting and others that are on standby, for when my works get larger or just in case there's a certain stroke needed.

I know it's abilities and I look to it's story.
When I'm painting it becomes an extension of my hand and self. Painting plein air is the most freeing thing I do. In a meditative, healing state.. I am at peace and all the things that try to interrupt and cause me stress are gone. With it's little flecks of past works, layers of history cover it with joyous memories.

It tells of many pieces created and many more to come.

7 of 7 Plein Fire

"I love this piece especially!

It was a challenge to paint at night with a small outside light on behind me.
Sometimes I had to double check the color I was about to use when it's dark, purple looks alot like brown and vice versa. I can remember quickly drawing, chasing the dancing flames and hurrying to stoke the fire to keep it burning bright. Back and forth I would go sometimes it had burned down very far before I had to force myself to step away my drawing to put more wood on . For hours only me and the crickets as my family quietly slept. I wasn't sure how it would turn out or if I could succeed at chasing flames. But I am happy with the end and do think I was able to capture the essence of the night, and would love to do it all again, it was a gorgeous summer night. "

hmm this piece I remember very well, like yesterday.

I had to force myself to find healing for some difficult things that had happened to our family.
For as soft and peaceful as this piece appears finished it's amazing how angry and tearful it began.

New Year Sale #2 of 7 Moon Rise

Here is number 2 of 7,

Moon Rise, listed at pennies comparable to my love for it.
I love this piece and am having a hard time listing it.
Why do I love it? It was so peaceful to watch and follow the moon as it rose behind the trees.
I let the moment by moment trail stay on the page. If you look from left ot right you can see on one page how the moon travelled. Many paintings I have created stay with me, I can recall how I felt, how the weather was, where I was standing etc.
This was drawn on our porch later one night, the only light I had was the small table lamp on the floor behind where I knelt, it was chilly beautiful time and I had to draw quickly minute by minute the moon was changing.

I am keeping one piece for myself that I just can't part with and that is Spring Poetry. Other than that I want to clear out my portfolio. I am pursuing gallery representation in three cities in two states and am entirely focusing on oil painting. I am no longer accepting portrait requests either.

Cheers to New works in an exciting New Year.
All the best

After Sunset Before the Sun

Yesterday was a wet, cold 30 something degrees in Northeast Ohio, full of gray blah and I decided to get outside and just paint, secretly hoping that the sunset would peak through the overcast skies as I laid the groundwork for my painting. It didn't as it sometimes does and I found myself excited to find the beauty in this drab lifeless weather,
and I am so glad that I did.

Although I prefer and truly love working alla prima, it's a rush to start and finish a piece in one day, this piece will be completed over the course of a couple days or so.
and believe it or not I hope the gray for now..... stays, I figured "Hey if you can't beat em well Beat them." I love a good challenge and as artists we are our own motivator and have to set our pace, determine our direction, the pieces we will make and when.

I will be posting wip shots!

Cheers
Rebecca

Turning Grey into lemonade

Being a plein air artist I am sensitive too and very affected by the weather.

It has been this unbreaking, uninspiring grey ceiling for days, weeks now.

Give me freezing conditions and blue sky, or some luminosity behind the grey and I am ok.
Ok to paint, ok in many ways.

I have some of the kindest friends who have sent me very thoughtful emails. Truly one was even filled with sunshine.

I did some research online and found out more about the Seasonal Affective Disorder or S.A.D.
It affects more people than you can imagine, nearly an estimated half million people during the winter months in the northern and southern hemispheres while extremely rare near the equator.

For a list of symptoms you can click here, and for treatments you can click here.

While I may be affected by this, I don't need artificial light therapy although a trip to Aruba would be nice. I don't need antidepressants or counseling.

It's easy.

All I need is Sun.
All I need is Sun.
All I need is Sun, Sun.
Sun is all I need.

There are a few rays now, finally....be back after sunset.
