Bird Song Large Plein Air Abstract

Here is another painting in my abstract series.
It measures 24" wide and 48" tall, oil on panel.


I have titled it Bird Song.

Although I should rename it to Ant Attack lol, because I must have set up on or near an ant home/hill I was swarmed and pestered constantly as I painted.

Part of me wants to rework this some or maybe add some layers of highlights and color but I'm not going too just yet. There is a freshness that I don't want to spoil.

Location, Location, Location

I'm sure you've heard how important that phrase is in real estate. It is much the same in art.

Where you display your work is important online and offline.
and that's one thing I strongly learned about where not to market my work.
I love fairs, craft fairs, festivals, meeting people, chatting etc even though I'm a bit shy.

There are 3 local Juried Fine Art Fairs this summer that I'm going to go visit and I am definitely going to apply to next winter.

I had a good time at the spring fling, it was a beautiful day.
Here's a small painting from the day.

I did get to meet Local Cleveland Legend Dick Goddard,
here's the autograph I got :)


It was fun:) When I said my name was Rebecca he said ahh Rebecca of Sunny Brook Farms,
lol I get that sometimes. So he wrote Rebecca Sunshine, I like that.

Changes 8" x 10" plein air painting

You wouldn't know it now but this little gem was covered in over a dozen tiny bugs.

Which is going to prompt me to write a companion to my short plein air guide,
titled The Official Guide to Debugging your Plein Air Paintings !:)
but that's for another day.

This was a wonderful day with soft billowing clouds. As I painted intermittently due to chasing our kids and juggling dinner, the day had slipped very far from the original inspiration but I was so happy to be greeted with the sunset to the West as I was painting North.

The colors changed so quickly that I did not have time to start a new piece and decided to go forward with this one and let those changes appear here.

For the most part, titles for my paintings come to me as I'm outside painting. Words, thoughts, emotions, little snippets of poetry float through my mind and usually something stands out enough to become a title.

This piece didn't have a simple, strong or direct expression.
I could call it Ruby 2, or Red Moment or nothing, it is what it is.

The word Ruby kept rolling through my mind over and over as I painted this moment.
and it's fun to say Ruby Ruby Ruby.
Which makes me say, I haven't a fondness of categorizing my art work just because every time I say landscape painting, those words don't fit really what I paint.
I strive to capture moments in nature with paint :)
Here are two detail pictures.




I wanted to share something exciting I have been doing for the last two Mondays.
I for one got out of the house without the kids even though I adore them :)
and I have a deep love of colored glass passed onto me through my mom, who shares it equally.
Our home was colored with gorgeous custom stained glass panels, stained glass lamps, her collection of antique bottles, she dug up and collected, and glass candle stick holders.
We agree there is something very special about stained glass, sand glass and glass in all it's wonderful forms.

I went to a local glass jewelry fusing class, tonight I'm going to pick up my pieces. I made little glass pendants, basically creating like I do with paint but this time in glass powder, frit (small chunks) and stringers (thin strings of glass). and in a form of my artwork glass landscapes.
I will take some pictures and post them tomorrow.

I have plans for them if they melt and shimmer like I hope they will.

Here is my new plein air triptych painting I just finished.

Painting is the most freeing thing I do,
it's the one activity I engage in to let myself go.
It is the one time my cluttered go go mind that is always multitasking making sure every end is tied, every need of our kids is met and every to do is done,
is washed over with peace and the moments I'm experiencing flow through me.

The more I can let myself go the more life is transferred onto my canvas.
This is why I love plein air painting.
and realize there's no turning back.
It is just as essential to my well being as it is to my art that I create from life as it's happening.

Finding Landscape painting on canvas

Finding

It's not often that I choose to let a painting go and prime over it to create a new one.

But what's under this painting was an attempt to create something, from a place I am not at any more but have the fondest memories of.

What I'm trying to say is I looked back and thought I could produce something like I had many years ago, it wasn't a success., We can't go backward only forward in new ways. I do like the texture from the previous painting coming through it fits very well and appears intentional, something I might try in the future.

What was amazing was how this sky changed as I was painting. The sunset slowly but dramatically shifting from these pastels to brilliant yellows, dark glowing purple and hot hot pinks. Although I didn't bring these changes into this painting, I chose to let them play out in front of me as I painted the soft distance it was wonderful to experience.

I am looking forward to the opening tomorrow and seeing the works of everyone involved up on the walls.

It doesn't bother me the change from a solo to a group show, it is going to be interesting to see three different interpretations of nature. One through paint, one photography and another through fiber.

I will try to get some pictures up Sunday.
and it's certainly a great way to end and begin a New Year.

I have some exciting ideas that I hope will begin to come to fruit this year.

I do love the idea of celebrating a new year, it's fresh, hopeful air waiting to be filled with new steps built upon the ones from the last year.

I am trying to tame my desire of bold colors and sharp lines.
not a large step but a good step, and the gentle winter we are experiencing is aiding me.

Instead of the gray weather dragging me down I'm finding beauty in the soft color schemes.

Both day and evening are filled with smokey earth tones, pastel horizons and common plum clouds, my eyes are embracing this gentler, more introspective side of nature.

Still straddling the line between impressionist, abstract, expressive modern art I'm finding myself in each painting . Where they are what I am and not a specific description box.

These are just some random thoughts that come into my mind when I look at this piece.
